What you get
Every visit covers the same ground, whatever the property.
- Full runs cleared by hand, including packed debris that water alone won't shift
- Downspouts flushed end to end, then flow-checked where they let out
- Debris bagged as we go and carried away — nothing left on site
- Hangers, seams and fascia looked over while we're up at the roof edge
- A plain account of anything we found, with no obligation attached
- Houses, character homes, townhouses, strata blocks and commercial buildings
Fernwood’s character comes from its architecture: dense rows of heritage homes built in the early 1900s, packed onto narrow lots with steeply pitched roofs and prominent dormers. The vertical bones of these houses are part of their charm — they’re distinctive, they photograph well, and they command the streetscape. They also put the gutters a long way up, and on a steep angle, in a neighbourhood where a lot of the stock has been converted into rental suites or split properties. When the gutters don’t get attention, you don’t see the problem from the street until the damage is expensive.
The typical Fernwood home sits 25 to 35 feet above grade, with a roof pitch steep enough that anything on the shingles works its way toward the gutters quickly. That’s good for shedding water in wet months — and Fernwood gets wet from October through March, with October rainfall often the heaviest of the year. What’s not good is that the same steep pitch makes the gutter lines difficult to access. A 40-foot extension ladder on a 45-degree slope is risky work, which is why so many Fernwood owners put gutter cleaning off. The ladder stays in the garage, debris accumulates, and the years pass.
We’ve worked on Fernwood homes for over a decade. We understand the architecture, the access challenges — many lots are too narrow to walk a ladder down the side — and the way deferred maintenance plays out on an older roof. Leaves and debris sit in gutters that are already difficult to reach, and the wet season keeps things damp and packed. After a few years of this, water sits against the fascia boards, rot sets in where the gutter is attached to the wood, and hangers that held fine for decades start to fail. Spikes pull free, seams separate, and the gutter itself starts to sag under the weight of compacted debris and water. That’s the point at which a simple cleaning won’t solve the problem anymore — you need repairs, and repairs cost more than two years’ worth of preventative cleanings.
The challenge isn’t just the height and the pitch. Fernwood roofs have dormers, gables, and valleys where the roof planes meet. Each of those is a place where debris collects and where the gutter runs change direction. A standard ranch home might have one long straight gutter run on each side. A Fernwood home has multiple sections, each one at a slightly different angle, creating pockets where water sits if the gutter isn’t clear. We know how to work those valleys and corners, and we know how to secure footing on a steep pitch while doing detailed work.
Our crew handles the access and the pitch that Fernwood demands. We work safely on steep slopes, navigate tight driveways and limited access, and know the gutter layouts that dormers and gable ends create. We take the ladder work off your hands so you can stay ground-level, and we clear the debris the right way — out of the gutters, off your property, and into a truck. You get gutters that flow freely into the downspouts, protection for your walls and fascia, and the confidence that your roof drainage is doing its job through the wet season.
Fernwood Square, Belmont, Grant Street, Gladstone, Stanley Avenue, and Haultain — these are the streets where we spend most of our time. We also serve the surrounding blocks and the transition areas into Vic West and North Park. Many of these properties are now split into multiple rental units, which means the landlord might not be aware that gutters need maintenance until damage appears. If you’re a renter in Fernwood and you notice backed-up gutters, clogged downspouts, or stains on the exterior walls, that’s a maintenance issue your landlord needs to address. If you own a property with multiple units, gutter maintenance is part of your responsibility — and it’s far cheaper to stay ahead of it than to deal with foundation water damage or rotted fascia later.
If your home sits on a steep pitch with a long gutter run, or if you’ve been putting off gutter cleaning because the access looks difficult, that’s exactly the job we’re built for. We’ll come out, give you a free quote with no obligation, and show you the difference between gutters that are maintained and ones that are heading for trouble. That’s how Fernwood homeowners protect the investment their home represents.

Why Choose Totally Clean Gutters Victoria
Experience with heritage homes. We’ve spent over a decade working on the steep roofs and tight lots that define Fernwood’s housing stock. We know which rooflines are which, where debris collects, and how to work safely where access is limited.
Safe work on steep pitches. Fernwood’s gable roofs and dormers sit on angles that make ladders risky for homeowners. We’re insured and WCB-registered for the height and the slope, and we work with the right equipment and experience for every pitch we see.
Prevention before repair. A cleaning every six months keeps your gutters ahead of trouble. We catch issues early — hangers that are starting to fail, seams that need sealing, fascia that’s starting to show water damage — and we fix them before they become expensive jobs.
Clear communication about what we find. You’ll get a walk-through of what we cleaned, what we see that might need attention, and an honest assessment of whether it needs work now or can wait. No pressure, no up-sell.

How it works
What Happens When You Book Us
Four steps and no surprises. You tell us about the house, we price the real roofline, and the ladder work is ours.
Send us the details
Your address, how many storeys, and anything we should know before we turn up.
The awkward parts are the useful ones — an oak hanging over the back run, a side gate too narrow for a ladder, a neighbour's drive we'd need to cross.
We price your actual house
Every quote is built from your roofline, not from an average.
Run length, height, pitch, how much has packed in and how we'll reach it all move the number. You'll have it in hand before anything is booked.
We do the climbing
Gutters cleared, downspouts flushed, water followed to where it lets out.
Whatever comes out of the run leaves with us. Nothing gets tipped into a garden bed or left bagged by the gate.
You hear what we saw
From the roof edge we see things that are invisible from the lawn.
A hanger starting to pull, a seam beginning to weep, water standing in a section that should drain. You'll hear about it either way, with nothing attached.
Four steps. That's the whole thing.
- You send us the address.
- We send you the price.
- We clear the gutters.
- You stop thinking about them.
Ready when you are — send the form or give us a call for a free quote.

Got questions?
Gutter cleaning in Fernwood — questions
Why are Fernwood roofs harder to clean than other neighbourhoods?
Fernwood's distinctive architecture — 2- and 2.5-storey homes with steep gable roofs and dormers — puts the gutters 25 to 35 feet above the ground on houses that sit on narrow 30-foot lots. The steep pitch means gutters are difficult to access safely, and the height makes it a risky job for a homeowner with a ladder. The combination of slope and height is exactly what we see over and over in this neighbourhood, so we've built our process around it.
What happens when Fernwood gutters don't get cleaned for years?
Deferred maintenance is the story of Fernwood. When gutters sit uncleaned for five, seven or ten years on a steep slope, the debris packs down and holds water against the fascia boards. On older homes, that rots the wood where the gutter is attached, causes hangers to fail and spikes to pull free, and leaves water streaming down the walls behind the gutters. Once the fascia rots, a cleaning alone won't fix it — you're now looking at replacement work that costs thousands. We clear gutters before they get to that point, and we'll flag what we see that needs attention sooner.
Do you work on dormers and gable roofs?
Yes. Dormers, gables, and the valleys between them are where Fernwood gutters are — they're the whole structure. We work on those pitches safely, and we clear the valleys where debris collects where the roof planes meet. A lot of the work on Fernwood homes is exactly this: gutter runs that change direction as they follow a dormer or a gable end.
Are your crew insured for high-access work?
Absolutely. We're insured and WCB-registered for all the work we do, including on steep pitches and at height. That's non-negotiable for us, and it's the only way we can safely do the work Fernwood homes need.
My gutters back up even after cleaning. What's going on?
Backups on a steep roof can come from a few places. One: if the downspout outlet is just pouring water straight down, and there's no drainage below to carry it away, water can accumulate at the base and work back up. Two: debris can pack in the downspout elbow itself, not just in the gutter above. Three: older homes sometimes have buried perimeter drainage tile that's clogged or collapsed, so even a clear gutter will back up at the bottom. We'll look at all three and tell you what we find.
My property is a rental. Should the landlord be paying for this?
Yes. Gutter maintenance and roof drainage are landlord responsibilities in BC. A lot of Fernwood rental properties fall behind on it, though, which is why deferred maintenance is so common in this neighbourhood. If you're renting and gutters are clogged, let your landlord know. If you're a landlord with multiple units in Fernwood, a yearly cleaning schedule makes sense — it's cheaper than fascia repair later.
How often should Fernwood gutters be cleaned?
On Fernwood's steep roofs with older gutters and tight lots, we usually recommend a fall cleaning and a spring touch-up. If you're under mature trees, or if your gutters have already shown signs of neglect — sagging, loose hangers, stains on the fascia — starting with a deep clean and then maintaining twice a year keeps them ahead of trouble. The cost of two cleanings is a fraction of fascia repair or hanger replacement.
What if my gutters need repair, not just cleaning?
We'll flag what we see: hangers pulling out, spikes that need resetting, separated seams, sagging runs, or fascia damage. Some of that we can fix on site — tightening a hanger, resetting a spike, sealing a seam. Some needs a carpenter or a gutter specialist. We'll be honest about what's worth fixing and what's not, and we won't sell you work you don't need.
The gutters on my Fernwood home are very old. Can they be cleaned safely?
It depends. Old gutters can be brittle or fragile, and they might be attached to old fascia that's already weak. We'll inspect them carefully before we start, let you know if we see any risk, and stop if something starts to fail during the work. Some old systems we can work on safely. Some are better served by replacement. We'll tell you which before we charge you anything.
Can I get a quote without someone coming out to the house?
We give free quotes in person because a steep Fernwood roof is the kind of job you need to see to price fairly. We'll come out, look at the gutters and the roof, talk through what we see, and give you a clear quote with no surprises. That visit is free, and it's how we make sure you know what you're getting.
